BAAT is delighted to bring you our first in-person performances of 2023: a hilarious short play that will play at two different venues across the USA within the month of July!
Synopsis
Our inner self is always talkative, whispering our deepest thoughts and desires that we desperately try to keep wrapped behind our external facade. We present ourselves as this cultured, nuanced, and dignified social self; but our alter ego keeps screaming and whining in our minds constantly. So what happens if you could suddenly see and hear the alter ego on stage?
Not just one, but two alter egos and their real world selves! A meeting between two close “friends” from college brings two women to a sweet reunion. But we also get to see their raw unfiltered alter egos, commenting about their dresses, admitting to their own mistakes, and bickering loudly about old wounds and ex-flames.
Come and join the Bay Area Amateur Thespians (BAAT) at the Fest O’Theatre in Dallas, TX on July 8, 2023; and Bangamela 2023 in the San Francisco Bay Area on July 29 & 30, 2023 as we stage a hilarious modern day Bengali adaptation of Alice Gerstenberg’s “Overtones” (1916). It is adapted, translated, and directed by Sudipta Chatterjee, and features some of the best talent of the San Francisco Bay Area on stage.
আমাদের প্রত্যেকের মনের মধ্যেই রয়েছে আর একটি মানুষ – যে সারাদিন আমাদের কানের কাছে সেইসব অবাঞ্ছিত কথাগুলি ফিসফিস করে বলে চলেছে, যা আমরা যেন-তেন-প্রকারেণ আমাদের মনের মধ্যেই চেপে রাখতে চাই। কারণ এই কথাগুলো কোনোক্রমে বাইরে এলেই কেলেঙ্কারি! তখন এই যে আমরা শিক্ষা-রুচি-সৌজন্য-বিনয় – এইসব ভদ্রসমাজের উপযোগী মোড়কগুলির মধ্যে নিজেদের যত্ন করে মুড়ে রাখতে চাই – এক মুহূর্তে সেই রং-বেরঙের চকচকে মোড়কগুলি যাবে খসে আর বেরিয়ে পড়বে ভেতরের কঙ্কালটা। সেটা কি হতে দেওয়া যায়? নৈব নৈব চ!
আচ্ছা, এমন যদি হতো, যদি হঠাৎই সেই মনের ভেতরে থাকা দুর্মুখ, আগলহীন মানুষটার কথা আমরা স্পষ্ট শুনতে পেতাম – আর মনের ভেতরে ফিসফিস করে নয় – একেবারে প্রকাশ্যে, যা মুহূর্তেই পৌঁছে যাবে সকলের কানে! তাহলে? আর যদি একটা না হয়ে একেবারে দু-দুটো ভেতরের মানুষ একসাথে বেরিয়ে আসে? বহু বছর পরে কলেজের দুই বন্ধুর হঠাৎ দেখা। মুহূর্তেই জমে ওঠে আড্ডা। কতশত পুরোনো কথা – ফেলে আসা প্রেম – কপট ঈর্ষা! আর এর সাথেই আমাদের কানে আসে দুই বন্ধুর ভেতরের মানুষদুটির প্রকাশ্য টিকাটিপ্পনি – সকল প্রকার সামাজিক শিষ্টাচারের প্রতি দায়বদ্ধতাহীন – অকৃত্রিম – নগ্ন। যা আমাদের শিহরিত করে, স্তব্ধ করে – কখনো হয়তো বা দেয় মুহূর্তের গোপন আনন্দ – আবার কখনো বা লজ্জিতও করে নাকি?
এলিস গার্স্টেনবার্গের মূল রচনা “Overtones” অবলম্বনে বে এরিয়া অ্যামেচার থেসপিয়ান্স-এর সাম্প্রতিকতম নিবেদন “আসল কথা হলো”। নাটকটির অনুবাদ ও পরিচালনা করেছেন সুদীপ্ত চ্যাটার্জি, এবং মঞ্চে অভিনয়ে থাকবেন সান ফ্রান্সিস্কো বে এরিয়ার সেরা বাঙালি অভিনেত্রীরা। আসুন বঙ্গমেলা ২০২৩ এ উপভোগ করুন এই অভিনব কৌতুক নাট্য!
